چکیده

High resolution peripheral quantitative quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) permits in-vivo assessement of trabecular microstructure at an isotropic voxel size of 82μm. The new imaging modality has potential in the differentiation of certain forms of osteoporosis based on the associated microstructural patterns. In this paper we propose an approach that assesses bone microarchitecture based on texture features extracted from the trabecular bone. The method is based on a three-dimensional gray level co-occurence matrix descriptor, and a k-medians clustering in the feature space to indicate characteristic categories of texture. The distribution of the microarchitecture classes allows for a differentiation between osteoporotic and healthy subjects. We report initial results for the repeatability of the clustering method and the feasibility of the differentiation between healthy and osteoporotic bone for 6 subjects.

Mandibular Trabecular Bone Analysis Using Local Binary Pattern for Osteoporosis Diagnosis

Background: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD) and micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and increased fracture risk. Since Panoramic image is a feasible and relatively routine imaging technique in dentistry; it could provide an opportunistic chance for screening osteoporosis. In this regard, numerous...

Trabecular Pattern Analysis of Proximal Femur Radiographs for Osteoporosis Detection

The most common approach to the study of the structural changes with age in the proximal femur is by means of the Singh index. However, subjectivity of its grades determination may limit its practical value. In this paper, we used several texture analysis techniques to characterize the trabecular pattern changes in proximal femur recorded in radiographs that lead to osteoporosis detection. Text...

A Digital Model to Simulate Effects of Bone Architecture Variations on Texture at Spatial Resolutions of CT, HR-pQCT, and μCT Scanners

The quantification of changes in the trabecular bone structure induced by musculoskeletal diseases like osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and others by means of a texture analysis is a valuable tool which is expected to improve the diagnosis and monitoring of a disease. The reaction of texture parameters on different alterations in the architecture of the fine trabecular netwo...
